Mortar Analysis

Mortar analysis of samples of cement mortar composition from masonry restoration projects is the most important part of the masonry repair. Analysis of mortar samples allows us to identify the cement and lime proportions and mix to sand ratio of mortar. While no testing method for analyzing mortar can give absolute mix proportions of the binder materials, our mortar testing procedure does allow us to give more accurate and reliable results.
In our mortar analysis, we have combined the standard acid digestion method for analyzing mortar with some scientific mortar testing methods. This allows us to limit the range of error and provide reliable mortar testing results in our analysis report.

We identify the mortar composition formula, type of lime (type S/SA or historic lime), and provide you a cleaned sample of the original sand for matching. Our mortar analysis report provides the mortar/cement performance details from the tests and a detailed summary of results including recommendations of mortar mix formula and sand.

Testing of mortar samples takes about 5-10 days to analyze mortars.
Cement mortar analysis costs $350.00 per sample tested.
We need about a half cup or more mortar per sample.
Crumbling mortar samples are ok. We can still test crumbled mortar.
